The Kinship Hug Project in 2024
This is an extension of and in addition to our existing Little Hug project. We would very much like to make some bigger blankets for folk in need of comfort.
2024. Very much an ongoing project. No specific deadline. Please post when you are ready, to Teddington.Thank you x
We are asked from time to time to help families or individuals within our own WH community going through incredibly difficult, bleak or sad times, by sending them a blanket full of love and comfort. We see these as helping folk who need support and compassion. Can you help us? We would be so very grateful. We would love to collect 12 inch ( or 6) squares in Stylecraft Special DK to make blankets, and have some colour schemes to work from. This will help us in compiling and donating to families. Just from these colours please, simple, complex, single colours, multi (within a collection), all very welcome indeed. We also welcome knitters and crocheters equally to this project.
Our Colour Palettes
WH classic: Lavender, plum, violet, emperor, storm, meadow, cypress, denim, petrol, sage
Vintage: Duck egg, grape, sage, storm, parchment, pale rose, pomegranate, raspberry, cloud blue, sherbert
Spiced: Plum, gold, meadow, cypress, pistachio, lime, saffron, burgundy, spice, tomato, claret, mustard.

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2016!!
- Blankets are going to the children! This shows the whole collection for Portsmouth.
For the last two years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers visiting the Leeds area for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project. [[http://beta.woollyhugs.com/index.php/current-projects/ Photos from previous projects are here…]]
Each year these marvellous folk bring children over who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%; the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. This year the group in Leeds are again bringing older children/teens over who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.
But we always want to do more, and we have been in contact with two further groups. These are based in Billericay and Portsmouth, and support slightly younger children, and run by the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. In essence they do the same wonderful work in bringing children over for respite from the shocking conditions.
How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.
So that’s 36 blankets! [grin] [star] [star] [wine]With your help we know we can do this
Please do join us, here’s how..
Crafting Information
- We would like 12″ squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
- PLEASE AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily.
- Make in a non-specific colour theme, or specifically for a boy or girl.
- We will be happy to accept 6″ squares if making a 12″ one feels too much.
- Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
- If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
- If you are thinking about making a whole blanket, please contact us first, thank you. We will ask that whole blankets be suitably neutral or rainbow in colour to suit either boy or girl easily, so avoid pinks and think about designs. Still cheery colours though please!
- Blankets are to be 48 inches by 60 inches.
- We have started earlier than previously, as the first group (Portsmouth) arrive in May.
- Initial stage of crafting is over and kits are with the construction crew, photos as soon as we have..
No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that week. Thank you.

2015 : Woolly Knockers for Portsmouth!
This is a project to help the Breastfeeding Advisory team at Portsmouth Hospitals’ NHS Trust who are on the hunt for more of these valuable props to enhance their support sessions. With so many babies born every year, they really do get through a lot! Breastfeeding is not always easy, and the woolly knockers are fabulous to help with latching, feeding, positioning and expressing demonstrations, and are such a useful tool for both new mums and staff. Some of you will remember we ran a very successful similar project for the Brompton a few years ago. Heading photo on this page from back then. All the money in the world cannot buy this product so it’s a labour of love for the team. Thank you [thanks]“It doesn’t matter about the colour, shape or size, we are really thankful to everyone who knits and makes donations to us, and we would be very grateful to receive any more- the more the better!” PortsmouthWe’d love to be able to help them, will you join us?The Knitting pattern given by Portsmouth is here, on the Breastfeeding Network… But it is very similar to the pattern courtesy of the Lactation Consultants of Great Britain we used before. That can still be found here on our website if you prefer.A suggested crochet pattern is here on Ravelry….You find others, do share any with us, so we can pass the info on. Thank you. We’re suggesting any DK wool that can be machine washed, and do have some of our Stylecraft winnings set aside for this, if you need it, please message us and we’ll get some sent to you.If you are able to stuff them, please do, but we will also love to receive them flat, cheaper for you to post too, and stuff this end, if this option, please leave a long tail for finishing off.Women come in all shapes and sizes, we really aren’t making a standard knocker here, differences are good! If you need any more information, please do not hesitate to contact us.Once your knocker is finished, please contact us we will give you all the details for posting.Last posting is to be October 31st 2015.We could do with more than a handful. 😀As ever, many thanks.Bless you… and your knockers. xx
