Welcome to Woolly Hugs, glad to have you on board. You are very welcome here!
Woolly Hugs is a busy online community run entirely on a voluntary basis. It is hoped that through our work, babies, children and their families will feel love, support, comfort and a physical reassurance through our blankets, the sense of being loved and looked after. Because we run our organisation through the website, we have members worldwide, but the majority are based in the UK.
The aim of our online community is to bring individuals together with the common goal of helping
others, whilst also providing therapeutic value, supporting all, including those who are isolated
through geography, advancing age or poor physical or mental health.
We actively encourage donations so that we can be inclusive, so all can craft for our charity
irrespective of whether they can afford to or not. Costs are not to be a barrier.
We have many ongoing projects which we advertise across social media. Our crafters can contribute as much or as little as they like and we welcome all levels of crafting ability.
Our current ongoing projects can be found here…
You will find our Little Hug projects for very sick babies and children in hospitals across the UK (GOSH, Newcastle, Glasgow and Manchester) Also our Angel Hug project for families who have devastatingly lost a baby at or soon after birth. We also make blankets we call Snugs for Looked after babies and children across the UK, focussing on different groups run by the Children’s Family Trust, so far we have supported children in Portsmouth, the NE of England and the Midlands. One of our busiest projects is our Candy’s Hug project, making bright and cheerful blankets for wonderful women undergoing treatment for cancer.
As well as these UK based projects we support children in developing and low income countries with World Child Cancer and the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline (Billie’s Blankets) and are making and sending blankets and warm clothing to refugees in Kurdistan, Lesvos and through the Red Cross to refugees in the UK.
In addition we have projects such as our blankets for children affected by Chernobyl, yarn bombing with Children’s Hospice South West and knitted/crocheted breasts for breastfeeding units in the UK. We also run Craft Sales to raise much needed funds for ourselves and at Christmas we send a third of profits to a chosen charity relevant to our group, these in the past include WAY (Widowed and Young) Together for Short Lives, MIND, Winston’s Wish, CarersUK and the Honeypot Children’s Charity for young carers.
We are always very happy to hear from folk who would like to join us: all are welcome, donors and crafters alike. Knitters and crocheters, beginner or experienced, we’d love to have you on board. We also warmly welcome those who sew, little fabric quilts are fabulous and work beautifully well in our projects. Our donors of funds or resources mean so much to us too. Our aim is to be inclusive, so everyone can join us if they would like, and some folk just wouldn’t be able to afford to without the support of our donors.
