Our Hugathons are a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow Woolly Huggers who share a love of crafting. They are very friendly and inclusive. It is a great time for chatting with your fellow Woolly crew and sharing ideas. If Tortie behaves we will let him come too! We’ve included some testimonials from folk who have been to one before, which might be useful if this is your first time.

During the Hugathon we will attempt to get as many 6 inch squares made. In Edinburgh we are focussing on our Chernobyl Project 2023.   We will provide all SSDK, but please remember to bring your 4mm hooks/knitting needles, you will need them! If you have any squares already made for THIS project, please bring them, it may be that we can get some kits out for construction.

Link to the Chernobyl Project is here….

We will also be running a rather fabulous Lucky Dip (£1 a go) and our legendary Gin Raffle (£1 a ticket)  We will also be running a DeStash table. If you have crafting items to donate to our DeStash table please do bring, remember one person’s destash is another person’s treasure!

And finally we will play our Yarn Bingo game, you will not want to miss this!

We have use of the kitchen area, and will provide the wherewithal for making tea and coffee for a donation. Bring a packed lunch, snacks and drinks, we won’t judge if that is alcohol!

From folk who have been to a Hugathon before…

Walking into a room of people you might have never met could be daunting … but at the Hugathon you are surrounded immediately with love, purpose and wool! What better way to spend a day? Alexsis

A warm woolly welcome to all. I travelled there alone, anxiously entered, not knowing a soul. Within a few mins I felt so welcomed and part of this wonderful group. A room full of like minded people, wool galore, cakes, tea, coffee, and probably gin 🤪 Julie

A wonderful experience meeting friends and like minded people. Like sinking into a warm bath of friendship I’ve always known but never met before. Jen

Attending the Woolly Hugs Hugathon was an amazing experience, putting faces to the names you had made friends with online in the pursuit of a common goal to spread yarn love around the UK and the World. Paula

A fabulous day meeting ‘strangers’ I have known online for years. Sharing yarn, craft skills, cake and laughter. Returning home full of love for the wonderful Woolly Huggers! Jo

It was lovely to meet all the folk I have made virtual friends with online . It gave me a real sense of us working together helping to make something beautiful and worthwhile . It was also lovely for the chat , laughter and to admire the amazing craftmanship going on around me , and how everyone was happy to share their expertise Steph

The hugathon is where the WH virtual community crosses over into a face to face community, meeting others who you may have got to know online. It’s so lovely to be able to sit and work and natter together, comparing notes and making friends. It epitomises the spirit of WH, crafters working together to benefit others. Alison

I’ve only been to one but it was brilliant and had gin 🤣 Anna

Chernobyl 100! Our Chernob Project 2023 for the Early Birds!

The invasion of Ukraine by Russia as we all know is incredibly devastating, some of our Chernob families have been able to leave, others have to stay, but the CLL continue to be astonishing in their efforts to support families. Even those who managed to flee now have incredible stuggles as funding ceases and finding accommodation or meeting basic needs are a challenge.

We can’t fix this, but we can do our part as best we can. We can confirm our project will run in 2023, and are launching it as Chernobyl 100. We aim to acheive 100 blankets!

Looking at what has just happened. Early in December 2022, 100 Ukrainian children were driven to Lubin in Poland by our friends at the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline for a respite break with Christmas treats and Father Frost! We can only imagine how much this was needed. We have included a few pics from their trip. So delighted to see our name on their fireplace. These children already have very little, still with the threats from the legacy of Chernobyl , now with war looming all around and the impact that has on every part of daily life. Each child was given one of our blankets. This is overwhelming. What the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline have done here is extraordinary, so glad these children and families have a warm blanket full of love from us. So glad we can do this. These kids are now all going back into Ukraine with the uncertainty, dangers and chaos. But they’re all taking love and woolly warmth from us. It doesn’t fix anything but it’s a tangible sign of love and care.

This means the world. Thank you!

So we hope you are all ready for Chernobyl 100 in 2023?!

For many years we have been making warm, comforting blankets for Belarusian and Ukrainian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline, Chernobyl Children’s Project and the Friends of Chernobyl’s Children. Devastatingly for the children and their families COVID and now war have put these trips on hold. But we can still get our blankets to the children! So much more than just a blanket, these Hugs send love, hope, friendship and warm comfort to the children and their families.

So in 2023 we hope to repeat this, and with your love and support we are very hopeful!

We need YOU!!

Here’s how you can help….

Squares. We need twelve inch squares in the Stylecraft Special DK palette as in photo,  if 12 is too much, 6 inch squares are fine too, just this yarn in these colours please, inc for embellishments so the blankets come together and are consistent for wash and wear. Knit and crochet equally welcome, beginner or expert, as simple or complex as you like, single colour, multi colour. Design of square up to you, but not too lacy, they need to be hardy. Please use a 4mm hook or needles. If sizing is a challenge with your pattern/tension, we prefer them just under sized rather than over!

SO IMPORTANT! Please ensure you knot off every end/colour change very very securely, leave approx a 6 inch tail end and use a needle to sew in. These blankets have to be super sturdy as there is no way back to fix them if squares collapse.

Whole blankets We know some crafters love to make their own whole blankets and this is wonderful! Please use SSDK. Finished blanket size remains the same at 48inches by 60 inches, and please work within the colour palette.

Donating funds As always we like to be inclusive and would love to send yarn to folks who otherwise would not be able to craft. In addition,we already know there will be the cost of transporting them to the children again and would be incredibly grateful to anyone who would like to donate funds for this project.

Looking forward! The Great Spring/Easter Craft Sale and Auction 2023. Monday 13th – Saturday 18th March.

Welcome to our Easter 2023 craft sale and Auction crafting phase! Thank you so much for joining us.  All funds raised will go directly into our own Woolly Hug projects. Every penny raised will go to help others, we hope you will support us, either by crafting, buying or even maybe both! Thank you so so much. x

Crafting info…

We would love our crafters to make Spring/Easter craft items, and to keep postage costs to a minimum we ask that ideally anything made can be sent on to a buyer in a large envelope. We are open to larger items too obviously, that is just a guide. We will then sell these beauties through the sale.

Some suggestions for you, but we are very open to others too…

  1. Spring and Easter decorations, bunting, garlands, Easter egg themes etc
  2. Anything sheep wise is always popular!
  3. Small gifts – Little bags, purses, brooches, hair accessories, key rings, gift bags, tags,
  4. Clothing – but lightweight please, we find heavier winter hats, scarves don’t sell well at this time. PLEASE include the yarn type or ball band so we can let folk know how to wash their new treasure. Socks are always very popular!
  5. Woolly, fabric, card, embroidered, beaded, all crafty crafts welcome!!
  6. Lovely lovely things!

Absolute last posting for crafts to be March 1st please, earlier is better for us if at all possible.

Please message for the posting information if you need, but it will be Teddington.

The Event itself…

Our Spring/Easter 2023 Craft sale and Auction will take place ONLINE on a Facebook Event page and our own Auction site attached to this website as before, between Monday 13th March – Saturday 18th March.  Finishing on the Saturday as Sunday is Mothers’ Day!

Some items will be up for instant sale on our event wall during this time, others through auction on our Auction Site which will help folk not on Facebook, or those who prefer to take part in this way. Do message us if you have any questions.

We are keeping it all crossed that this Sale will be a huge success, with your love and support we have every confidence, huge heartfelt thanks.

THANK YOU!!!!

The Winter of Woolly Love 2022

We know some folk like a project over our winter break, and this year we have the most perfect project, our newly launched Peony Project for elderly care patients.

Knitters and hookers alike are welcome and all levels of ability, let’s aim for as many squares as we can?! (If making a whole blanket, any yarn in these kind of colurs is perfect if it is soft and machine washable)

  • Cloud blue
  • Duck egg
  • Pistachio
  • Meadow
  • Cypress
  • Cornish blue
  • Denim
  • Storm blue
  • Lavender
  • Proper purple
  • Plum
  • fondant

Post to Teddington please.

The Peony Project including new Peony Pals!

UPDATE..

I would like to thank you for the beautiful blankets that you have provided us with, our patients are thrilled with the blankets, they give the ward a very homely feel which offers a lot of comfort to our patients.
I hope I’m not being cheeking but I also wanted to ask if you ever make any dementia fidget toys e.g dolls and muffs with buttons.  We always have dementia patients on the ward who struggle with everyday activities and we find these really help as they like to fidget to keep their hands busy.
Thank you so much again.

Ward 31
RVI
We can do this!
We are going to incorporate our existing Bee’s Blankets project in here, beautiful sensory lap blankets. Click here to find out more
We think the Octopus for preemies pattern would work very well here too. But obviously in a DK or Aran yarn for sizing. Click here for a free octopus pattern.

We have also created this Pinterest board for ideas for other Peony pals ideas. The most important thing is that we send safe items for these folk. The soft book made from six inch squares could be an easy project, the tangy style blankets are great and easy for sewing folk. Have a think. THANK YOU!!

And the blanket side, this project is ongoing! Thank you!

Absolutely delighted to be launching The Peony project, which aims to support wonderful older folk on the Elderly Care ward at the RVI in Newcastle. We were delighted to receive a request arrived from them, have included part of the email…

We receive your lovely blankets for children and babies on our ward which are very much appreciated.  (These are our Little Hugs/Chrsitmas Cwtches for Newcastle)

I just wanted to let you know that we had a call a while ago about a dementia patient in Adult PICU. He needed to be distracted and loved woollen things to keep him calm.  We did take one of your larger blankets up to help and it was very much appreciated. It felt to me that the blankets were being made for the beginning of someones life as a baby and at the end for someone with this terrible desease…

It was just a thought, we do have a specific Elderly Care ward here which is ward 31 if you would be interested in helping them in any way.

Thank you again for all you do, they are so beautiful and I know how much work must go into each and every one of them, so thank you again.

We’d love to help, and hope that you will be on board too.

Why the peony?

Generally peonies are symbolic of love, honour, and compassion amongst other things. Peonies are traditionally given on special occasions as an expression of goodwill, best wishes, and joy. Seems a perfect fit we think.

We are looking for single bed sized blankets so our usual size of 48 inches by 60 inches.

Colours and styles to use..

A lot of research has gone into dementia and Alzheimers with relation to colour. And we are indebted to Jo Schumacher for the time she gave to this, and it has informed our colour palette.

KNIT AND CROCHET EQUALLY WELCOME!

  • Use bright and bold. Red, blue, pink green, purple and orange. Green is one of the last colours patients can recognise, so lots of green! But do use contrasting colours.
  • We are avoiding yellow as it can raise the metabolism, potentially causing aggression.
  • Dark colours can give the impression of holes and could be distressing, so avoid anything too dark, definitely no black.
  • Avoid bold patterns and stripes as they can be confusing and disorientating.

If making a whole blanket, and this would be our first choice where possible, please use any soft, machine washable yarn in these kind of colours.

Simple squares are perfect, a garter knit or granny square in a single colour are absolutely gorgeous.

If a whole blanket is too much, please 12 inch squares (or 6 inch if 12 isn’t possible) in Stylecraft Special DK for consistency.

  • Cloud blue
  • Duck egg
  • Pistachio
  • Meadow
  • Cypress
  • Cornish blue
  • Denim
  • Storm blue
  • Lavender
  • Proper purple
  • Plum
  • fondant
  • Magenta
  • spice
  • shrimp
  • pomegranate
  • Lipstick

This is now an ongoing project, please make and send as ready. Truly gratefukl thank you!

Post to Teddington please.

The colours we picked out which would be suitable for Peonies.
