A fabulous day meeting ‘strangers’ I have known online for years. Sharing yarn, craft skills, cake and laughter. Returning home full of love for the wonderful Woolly Huggers! Jo

It was lovely to meet all the folk I have made virtual friends with online . It gave me a real sense of us working together helping to make something beautiful and worthwhile . It was also lovely for the chat , laughter and to admire the amazing craftmanship going on around me , and how everyone was happy to share their expertise Steph

The hugathon is where the WH virtual community crosses over into a face to face community, meeting others who you may have got to know online. It’s so lovely to be able to sit and work and natter together, comparing notes and making friends. It epitomises the spirit of WH, crafters working together to benefit others. Alison

  • 2022. Calling all knitters! We need hat and scarf sets for wonderful Care Leavers this Christmas!

2022. Calling all knitters! We need hat and scarf sets for wonderful Care Leavers this Christmas!

    Last posting please November 21st

We’ve been contacted and asked to help a wonderful group make as many hat and scarf sets to be given to care leavers at their organised Christmas Dinners this year.

Care Leavers Christmas Dinners were originally set up by the poet Lemn Sissay to help communities provide a Christmas Day for young care leavers (of foster and care homes) aged 18-25, who often spend the day alone.  It aims to be a magical day to be cherished and remembered by those who attend. Please see the link which gives more detail regarding The Dinner: http://thechristmasdinners.org.uk/

One of their lovelies, Katie coordinates knitters to gift hand knitted hats and scarves to include with the presents given to the care leavers. The Care Leavers project collected around 200 hand knitted and donated hat and scarf sets last year to gift to care leavers in Leeds and Bradford and two Christmas Dinner groups in London.

The aim this year is to gift hat and scarf sets to as many Christmas Dinner groups across the UK as possible. Hopefully the dinners will go ahead as normal this upcoming Christmas, with care leavers being able to gather together for food, pressies, company and fun on the 25th. Regardless of what happens, they still gift these young people hand knits to ensure a cosy Christmas.

Here is where we come in….

If you would like to be involved with the project and knit a hat and scarf set for the care leavers attending the upcoming Christmas Dinners in the UK, READ ON YOU LOVELY PERSON!

The crafting info is specific and precise, so if you are keen, make sure you are meeting their criteria!

We will need folk to commit to a hand AND scarf set

    Crafting Info

    • The chosen patterns (Wheat Scarf and Barley Hat) can be downloaded for free from the Tin Can Knits website (see link below). If any knitters prefer to knit flat rather than in the round the alternative hat pattern we ask them to use is the Basic Family Knit Hat pattern which can be downloaded for free from the Yarnspirations website (see link below).
    • We ask that the hat is made WITHOUT the pompom.
    • We ask that the yarn used is machine washable, aran weight  in solid, gender and cheery neutral colours. Thinking about this we’d suggest reds, oranges, blues, greens, plums, purples, greys, black?
    • Adult size please.
    • Add a Christmas label sending Christmas wishes and letting the recipient know how best to care for their gift.

Unfortunately hookers will have to sit this one out as there is no given crochet alternative. Or maybe this is the time to learn??

    http://tincanknits.com/thesimplecollection.html

They would also greatly accept any knits for children and babies, as young care leavers attending the dinner sometimes have children of their own. The two hat patterns include sizes for babies and children, but any pattern can be used be it hats, garments, booties, etc. Any colour of yarn can be used for children and babies knits.

    Posting will be Teddington.

    Thank you SO MUCH!!

  • Billie’s Blankets for World Child Cancer in Malawi, November 2022

Billie’s Blankets for World Child Cancer in Malawi, November 2022

    Always thinking of beautiful Billie.

AUGUST 2022. We’ve had a request from World Child Cancer and are delighted that post COVID they are able to get back to their hospitals and help children and their families.

Last posting for whole blankets only October 8th, thank you

    The Billie’s Blanket Project

Since the beginning, the aim of the Little Hugs has been to provide little blankets that give comfort to babies and small children who are seriously ill in hospital. This project is an extension of that and was launched in 2013 as a tribute to beautiful Billie who died at 14 from leukaemia. In her name, we send little blankets to children who really need a woolly hug and to feel loved and looked after.

We work with the wonderful organisations World Child Cancer  for Little Hugs to be sent to children suffering from cancer in low and middle income countries. In these countries their overall chance of survival can be under 10% compared to around 80% in high income countries such as ours. The first collection of Billie’s Blankets went in April 2013 to Malawi, over time we have also sent to the Philippines, Ghana, and Vietnam

These children need all the love and comfort possible. So please, in memory of a sparkling young girl who always thought of others, we’d love you to help us help them. As ever, thank you so much for your support. All crafting info is below.

Next delivery will be to Malawi in November 2022!

We’d love your help, this is how :

    • You can help by either making a whole blanket, Minimum size: 24 inches by 24 inches. If you would like to make a blanket that is bigger, we REALLY need these too. The children are aged 0 to 14 so we will need bigger blankets too. Suggested yarn: Stylecraft Special DK, a soft, non-scratchy acrylic yarn. If you would like to make a whole blanket, you could use a different weight and make of acrylic yarn. The essential thing is that it needs to be soft against sensitive and delicate skin and that it can be washed and dried quickly and easily. Or……
    • Colours: Your choice. Although for practical reasons, we advise avoiding white and cream.
    • Things to avoid: Any embellishments that could scratch delicate skin or could be swallowed. If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can’t due to the costs involved, please message us and we’ll try to help with materials. If you would like to contribute towards materials, you can either donate via Paypal here on our Woolly Hugs website or if you do not have Paypal, please message us.

    From Word Child Cancer
Your blankets are beautiful and I’m sure they provide great comfort to the children who you make them for. I’m sure the children would love them. Unfortunately
most of the children we see at our projects are not able to survive their cancer due to the poor conditions, lack of knowledge and the high cost of medicine in the worlds poorest countries. In these cases we encourage palliative care for the children through our twinning partners who provide training for local project staff on the importance of this care, especially in pain relief. Psychosocial care is also very important and an area we focus on through supporting parent groups and play therapists. I think your blankets would fit in well with this area.’
